What is autism ?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of conditions characterized by challenges or difficulties with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and nonverbal communication, as well as unique strengths and differences. We now know that autism is not just one type, but rather several, caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors and influences
It is a developmental disorder whose primary symptoms include difficulties with communication and social interaction, and repetitive and restricted patterns of behavior
The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths that each child with this disorder possesses. Its most noticeable features typically appear between the ages of two and three. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months
According to the World Health Organization, one in every 160 children worldwide has an autism spectrum disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder in the United States in 2020 was 1 in 54 children.
Causes of autism
From what we know now, there is no single cause of autism spectrum disorder. Research suggests that autism arises from a combination of genetic, non-genetic, and environmental factors. It is worth noting that the influence of these factors on the likelihood of developing autism does not make them a cause in and of themselves.
For example, some genetic changes associated with autism may be present in people who do not have the condition. Furthermore, exposure to one of these factors does not necessarily contribute to a person developing autism spectrum disorder; in fact, the vast majority will likely not develop it.
